Target Audience

Establishing a specific audience for a movie genre is completely different than establishing an audience for a music genre. This is because fans of specific music genres come with stereotypical characteristics and personalities. For example, someone who is a fan of heavy metal music will often be seen in gothic clothing and likes to attend gigs. However this isn't as simple for establishing the target audience of film genres. The main assumption we can create about the target audience is actually to do with gender. It may seem like a stereotypical view but it is very common for females to prefer romantic comedies or chick flicks and for males to prefer action or thrillers.

I asked some of my peers what they thought define a specific target audience for a film and they said:

"It's hard to say which genres of film appeal to which audience. I know that I personally like many film genres... I like chick flicks such as The Notebook, I like action films such as Indiana Jones and I also like horror films such as Saw."

"It is hard to stereotype against film genres because people like what they like. People will often see a film purely because of the people acting in it or maybe even the people who produced it."

Although it is bad to stereotype with gender, it is clear that our action/thriller film trailer will attract more males than it will females and therefore i briefly interviewed some of my peers about there characteristics.

Brandon, Matt and James are all of different ages and all have very different personalities. However they all agreed on the fact that they are not tied to a specific genre of film like they are with genre of music. They all said that if they liked the trailer of a movie, they are likely to go and watch it no matter what the genre is.

After a vast amount of research using UK tribes, it was still hard to determine which group would be the main target audience for our action/thriller film trailer. However, I concluded that people of an 'urban' focus would be the main attraction. This is because our film trailer is about terrorists and is set within an urban area. Also, the music we plan to use within our trailer is by artists directly related to their stereotypical genre of music such as Jay Z and Kanye West. The definition of the Urban tribe according to UK tribes is:

"Connected by inner city living, confident style makers and attuned to the underground sounds. Urban Tribes provide inspiration for the Leading Edge and from here, all other segments…
The Urban segment is intrinsically linked to inner city living – young people living in busy multicultural hubs, with rich and varied influences, where wealth and poverty sit side by side – and with access to the latest sounds, clubs and fashion."

However, with influence from UK tribes, I also decided that the Mainstream tribe would also be a main target audience for our film trailer. This is because the mainstream society do not have particular wants or needs in terms of favourable music, film, brands etc. They like what they like... If they see a film trailer that they like the look of they are likely to go an see it. Just like if they are a fan of the people acting in the film they are likely to see it no matter what genre is it.

As I have already established, our main target audience will be males. As a group, we concluded that our main audience would be aged 15-40 years old. This is because we aim to attract the younger audience (15-25) by creating the adrenalin rush they expect, but also we aim to create the interest which will attract the slightly older audience (26-40). We also agreed that target audience in terms of income bracket would be B (middle class) -C2 (skilled working class) and E (the social level). People that fit into the B-C2 bracket include:

  • Teachers
  • Graphic Designers
  • Electricians
  • Plumbers

Ordinarily, an action film will be catered towards people within the C bracket. However, because our film features an element of thriller, it is likely to attract people within the B social group due to its improvement in intellectuality.

The people who fit into the E bracket who we believe are our target audience are students a young people aged (15-21), people in school, college or university who may have a part time job in retail or waitressing but who's main focus is on education and therefore does not have a huge amount of disposable income.
