Ancillary Task Original Pictures
I took this picture using a Nikon D3100 SLR camera. My idea and aim was to have a sillouetted figure with bright light shining behind. I was fortunate that the lighting was bright on this day and therefore it came out exactly how i wanted it.
Ancillary Task Research
Sinster (2012)
Above is the official film poster for horror film Sinster, which was released fairly recently in 2012. This poster contains many convential feature that are expected of a film poster and many of the features are ones i wish to recreate in my own film poster.
Title
The first thing you notice other than the main picture is the title. The title has been created to coincide with the photo, in the photo you can see blood dripping down the wall, this has been recreated in the title and automatically implies that it is a horror film. The font used also features a skinny, haunting text which stands out due to its bold colour on a light background. In camparison to the trailer, the title is presented in exactly the same way; the same font, the same colour and the same background. This is a feature I have seen across many film posters as it represents the film as a brand and the style of the title almost acts as recognisable feature of the film.Picture
The most important feature of this particular poster is the main picture that has been used as it takes up most of the photo. It features stereotypical features of a horror film; a haunting little girl in pyjamas and bare feat and also blood dripping across the wall. The picture that has been painted out of the blood in the middle is also the main element of the film (a paranormal creature that has caused the whole storyline within the film). The main picture has many features which are similar to the trailer. This includes the child, the blood painted on the walls and also the paranormal creature.
Other Titles
Promotion of other films is a key convention of both trailers and posters. The majority of films are promoted by association with other films. If an audience has seen a previous film such as Parnormal Activity or Insidious, they will link how good the film was with the producers of it and therefore if they enjoyed other films made by the same producers, it is likely that the audience will also choose to see the new film being released. This is why this certain piece of text is an important feature of the poster. This piece of text also features on the trailer in the exact same format.
Other titles which feature on this poster is a "slogan" from the film, which is to create suspense and curiosity amongst the audience. This is an important feature of the film poster and also one that features on most posters. I think this is a very important way of adding character and emotion to the poster. This specific piece of text also features in the film trailer as titles throughout to cause suspense.
Credits
Film credits legally have to be on every film poster. They pretty much all use the exact same, hard to read font however they need to be on there and are a very important feature of the poster. They rarely feature in the film trailers.
